An original 1896 watercolour painting, William St Clair Simmons, Portrait of a Lady. This beautiful large portrait of a woman in a diaphanous blue dress is by the artist and illustrator William St Clair Simmons (ex.1875–1917). St Clair Simmons was working at the end of the 19th century, producing many illustrations for books in a style that bridged late-Victorian and Edwardian British illustration. His work comprised many illustrations for children's books, including for a number of publications by F.E. Weatherly, such as 'Honeymaid and Other Poems', 'Happy Childhood' and 'Rhymes and Roses'. (Weatherly, incidentally, was the author of the song 'Danny Boy', and Beatrix Potter's first signed illustrations were published in 'A Happy Pair', a book of verse written by Weatherly). The illustrations that St Clair Simmons produced for children resemble those of Kate Greenaway (1846-1901): presenting children at gentle play, they evoke the enchanting innocence of childhood. St Clair Simmons and Greenaway both contributed illustrations to the children's anthology 'Little Folks' Speaker: Recitations Selected for Little Girls and Boys'.The present portrait is described by St Clair Simmons as a copy from a portrait. The watercolour is painted with great delicacy, with a beautiful soft rendering of the face. It expertly captures the diaphanous translucency of the dress, whilst foliage to the lower right is painted with an expressive boldness. In watercolour with touches of bodycolour, on Whatman Board. All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography. The corners of the board are slightly knocked, with a small loss to the upper left corner and tiny tear to the upper right. Please see photos for detail. Presented: Unframed.
Weatherly, wie "Honeymaid and Other Poems", "Happy Childhood" und "Rhymes and Roses". Signiert: Signiert unten rechts. Beschriftet: Verso beschriftet. Datiert: Datiert unten rechts und verso. Höhe: 46,5cm (18,3″) Breite: 32cm (12,6″) Zustand: Leichte Alterstönung auf der gesamten Platte.
