Sunset
1979. Oil on canvas, 84x110 cm
The central focus of the artwork is a red sunset scene. The artist's portrayal captures the vibrant and warm hues of the setting sun, creating a visually striking and dramatic effect. The red sunset serves as the primary source of light and sets the tone for the entire composition.
The painting features black mountains and rocks at the shore, contrasting against the fiery red sky. The dark tones provide a stark contrast to the vibrant sunset, adding depth and enhancing the overall visual impact of the painting.
The sea is depicted as white and illuminated by the fading light of the sunset. The artist's use of white to represent the sea creates a sense of calmness and tranquility. It also serves as a contrasting element against the red sky, further highlighting the beauty of the sunset scene.
Laimdots Murnieks has said: "I am a sunny artist. The sun and a woman are the center of the world. It is not for nothing that the sun always comes with me in my paintings - it is the basis of everything and symbolizes my wife - Zhanna. I think that a woman is what inspires the whole world to do good deeds. I want to express such an idea with my painting - that the good will always win, that the beautiful will always win the world. That's the main thing! Neither war nor tragedies ever impress people like that, but it is beauty that gives strength to continue working and living . I was born under the Star of Happiness - everything has been achieved. Both in art and in love."
