Ceramicist Gareth Mason at Jason Jacques Gallery

More IS More

Von Ambra Medda

I headed uptown yesterday to visit Gareth Mason’s show at Jason Jacques gallery. I was lucky enough to meet the artists himself in this rather unexpected gallery space. Gareth's ceramic work is absolutely amazing. I never use the word "divine," but I think here it may actually be necessary.

The work is esoteric—so powerful in fact that it's sort of hard to be in a room surrounded by these objects. These incredibly crafted vases look like they fell from the sky and were recovered from the bottom of the sea. The glaze, shapes, and colors invite you to get closer and examine the piece in it's full splendor. Gareth was a true delight to talk to, such an inspired, interesting, humble, and dedicated craftsman. More is More, Mason’s second solo show at Jason Jacques Gallery, is up for another month. You must go see the work in person, it’s transcendental!
