Great design exhibition in the Miami Design District

Inventory 04

In the lead up to my recent move to New York from Miami, I often gave the excuse to my friends and family that South Florida does not support a rich enough, year-round design culture to suit my professional needs. “It’s not that I don’t like it here,” I would explain. “It’s just that I need to be closer to the action.” But one of my favorite projects I’ve seen this Art Basel week has caused me to ruminate on the ostensive motivations behind my migration.

Inventory is the brainchild of Miamians Thais Fontenelle—whom I’ve known for years through Luminaire, without a doubt the best design retailer in Miami—and Jessica Acosta-Rubio. Together they develop exhibitions and programs in support of young designers both local and international. If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain.

Inventory’s current show Time, on view this week in the Miami Design District, is their fourth since launching in 2010 and features a range of work, from the experimental to the elegant, from handmade limited editions to proper products. I’m super proud to see Miami design sisters doing it for themselves.

Here are some of our favorite designs included in Time:
