Delicate oil on canvas representing a view of the city of San Sebastian, capital of Donostia, by Dioniosio Azcúe Arregi (1885-1964). In this impressionist port, the different nineteenth-century inlets can be distinguished, as well as the city in the background, where the left tower of the facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria is visible. It is a painting of genuine impressionist technique, which can be appreciated, above all, in the disintegrated, material and fast brushstroke. This work has a lot of clarity, since before painting, the canvas has been given a white primer, which allows the colors to be lighter and more vivid. Colored shadows are also used (no black is used for the shadows but green and purple), as well as the use of complementary scents (orange and blue / purple and yellow). Balance, serenity and peace, are some of the feelings conveyed by this piece.
On the lower right, in deep blue, there is a dedication that reads "To Don José G. Goldaraz, modest memory of D. de Azcue, 1955". José García y Goldaraz (1893-1973) was a Spanish theologian and jurist who, in 1953, was appointed Archbishop of Valladolid. During his episcopate he participated in the Second Vatican Council. In 1970 he resigned for reasons of age and continued to reside in the city, where he died on June 10, 1973.
